The Best Underlay for Your Bed

Have you ever woken in the night feeling hot, sweaty and sticky? Or maybe you have trouble getting to sleep because you feel uncomfortable? Stop suffering and invest in the best bedding to help you rest well every night.

Why have an underlay on your bed?

If your sheet goes directly onto your mattress, you are not going to have the extra cushioning that an underlay provides, and by adding one it can all contribute to you feeling comfortable and having a great night’s sleep.

What’s more, an underlay is there to give you an extra level of protection for your mattress. A good mattress is an investment, and therefore you want to protect it from stains, sweat and other accidents that could occur.

What type of underlay should you go for?

At Halcyon Dreams, we specialise in woollen bedding because we recognise the many benefits that it has. A wool underlay will help to keep your bed soft and protected, but it does a lot more than just this.

A woollen underlay will help to regulate your temperature throughout the night. In the cooler weather, wool is there to keep your warm and snug, just as it would naturally when it is on a sheep. When the weather heats up, there is no need to change from your wool bedding. Wool is clever and adapts, meaning that it can help to keep you cool in warmer weather.

You also don’t need to worry about waking up with sweaty sheets as the wool will wick away any moisture that is created while you sleep. The wool holds onto this moisture, and then it naturally releases it when the conditions are dry enough to do so.

Another advantage of choosing wool is that it is great for those who suffer from allergies as it’s hypoallergenic. So, whether you have sensitive skin or you suffer from sneezing fits, you can look forward to being more comfortable at night when you choose wool.

Wool is also naturally hygienic, and it does not require much washing, so that’s one less chore that you have to do. Simply hang your underlay outside to freshen it up when needed.

Why not combine your woollen underlay with a wool quilt to get the best night’s sleep. We have a range of bedding available at Halcyon Dreams all made from quality Australian wool. Shop today and sleep well.

Freshen Up Your Bedding This Summer

The summer months are perfect for freshening up your bedding, and with a washable wool doona from Halcyon Dreams, it has never been easier to give your bedroom a good once over and sleep through the night in comfort once more.

The hygienic nature of wool

Wool is naturally hygienic, and it actually doesn’t need a lot of cleaning. Wool has three layers, and one of those layers is scaly. The scales in the wool are very small, and as they rub against one another, they clean off any dirt that is present, making it a naturally clean material.

Even though your wool doona can be washed, it doesn’t mean that you have to, and most of the time a good airing outdoors will suffice. Choose a warm, breezy day and hang your doona outside to allow it to freshen up.

If you don’t have any outside space, you can hang your doona up over a large area, such as stair bannisters.

Should anything get spilt on your wool quilt, you can spot clean if the area is small enough with a sponge or cloth.

Washing your wool quilt

We know that sometimes you may need to wash your quilt, and it is fine to do so as long as you follow the instructions. It’s one of the reasons why wool is the perfect choice for your child’s bedding. Even though accidents may happen, your wool can be washed and returned to the bed fresh and clean.

Make sure you choose a suitable program for your washing machine. A wool cycle is ideal, but if you don’t have one, choose a gentle program.

Add in wool detergent or non-biological washing detergent and let your machine do the work. When the cycle has finished, hang your doona out to dry, preferably in the fresh air on a warm day.

You need to ensure that you give your wool doona enough time to dry, and it should always be allowed to dry naturally and never put in a tumble drier. Even if it seems dry on the outer layers, it could still be wet within, so err on the side of caution to allow it to dry fully.

Your wool doona can also be dry-cleaned if your washing machine is not large enough or you don’t want to wash it yourself.
