What’s the difference between washable wool quilts and dry clean only doonas?

Woollen quilts that require dry cleaning usually contain wool that has been washed and carded before it is used to make your doona. Washable quilts typically undergo an additional process which involves soaking the wool in hot water containing small amounts of chlorine and peroxide to pre-shrink the wool. And just in case you were wondering – this process doesn’t affect the longevity of the wool or leave any kind of chemical smell behind. 

Can I wash my quilt in my home washing machine? 

It’s perfectly fine to wash your quilt at home as long as:

·         Your quilt will fit comfortably in the machine. E.g. you may be able to fit a single quilt into your machine but be unable to fit a queen size quilt or king size quilt in there. 

·         You use the wool wash cycle and a specialist wool washing detergent

·         You dry your quilt as flat as possible but allow air to circulate around it, for example by laying it over the top of your rotary clothes dryer.

If you can’t fit your quilt into your machine, you may want to visit a local laundromat with large capacity top loading washing machines. 

Can I wash my quilt in the bath? 

It is possible to wash a quilt in the bath but bear in mind that when it’s saturated with water, it will be cumbersome and difficult to manage, not to mention all the water that will end up on your floor when you remove it. 

Can I tumble dry a washable wool quilt? 

We don’t recommend putting woollen quilts into the tumble dryer. Full stop.

Should I air my quilt in the sunshine? 

Airing your doona in the sunshine is a great way to help keep your quilt fresh; however, don’t leave it out in the sun all day.
